MICROS Error 701 “No Communications” happens when the workstation loses connection to the back-of-house (BOH) server. The terminal might show red “No Comms” error icons and drop into Offline Mode, making it impossible to send orders or process payments.
Here’s how to diagnose and fix Error 701 fast so your restaurant can keep running.
Table of Contents
Common Reasons MICROS Error 701 Happens
- BOH server is offline or frozen
- Loose or damaged Ethernet cable
- Network switch/router rebooted or failed
- Wrong or missing static IP address
- MICROS CAL or database service stopped
- Firewall blocking communication ports
How to Fix MICROS Error 701 “No Communications”
1. Restart the MICROS Workstation
This forces the terminal to re-establish its database and network connection.
- Shut down from the restart menu
- Wait 10–15 seconds
- Power back on
If the BOH server is reachable again, Error 701 will usually disappear.
2. Reboot the BOH Server + Restart CAL
If multiple workstations show 701, the BOH server is likely the issue.
- Reboot the server if applications are frozen
- Restart “MICROS CAL” service in Windows Services
- Restart “MICROS Database” service if needed
When CAL stops, orders can’t route — so terminals go “No Comms” immediately.
3. Check Ethernet Cables & Network Equipment
Even a momentary network drop can cause Error 701.
- Confirm the Ethernet cable is firmly plugged into the terminal
- Check for active link lights on the switch port
- Swap to another port or cable to rule out failure
This is one of the most common causes of communication failures.
4. Verify Static IP Address Settings
If the workstation loses its static IP, it won’t be able to locate the server.
- Confirm the terminal’s static IP matches the MICROS config
- Verify correct subnet mask
- Ping server’s IP address from the workstation
Power cycles sometimes cause terminals to default back to DHCP — triggering this error.
5. Restart Network Switch or Router
If the entire system is offline, your network hardware may be the source.
- Restart the switch or router that serves the BOH
- Check whether other devices have connection issues
Network failure = system-wide “No Communications.”
6. Check Firewall & Antivirus Exceptions
Security software can sometimes block MICROS communication ports.
- Temporarily disable firewall for testing
- Whitelist MICROS applications in security rules
Always re-enable firewall protection after testing.
