Intuit QuickBooks POS Review

Quickbooks POS Software and Hardware

My Intuit QuickBooks POS review will explore the various components inside Intuit’s point of sale product. Intuit is well-known for its other software products, but does its POS platform live up to the hype? Let’s explore the pricing, features, eCommerce capabilities, customer service, and other elements of this modern system!

Overview of Intuit QuickBooks Point of Sale

Intuit QuickBooks POS is a powerful point of sale platform backed by Intuit – one of the nation’s most successful software providers. Intuit’s QuickBooks software is an accounting automation system that allows business owners to streamline their accounting processes. Intuit now enables users to integrate a POS platform with its proprietary QuickBooks software seamlessly by entering the point of sale industry.

While the primary benefit of using this platform is its backend connection to QuickBooks, you’ll also find a range of premium POS features packed into the system. Users can easily accept point of sales transactions, track sales, offer gift cards, input inventory, and more. It’s also one of the most intuitive platforms on our list of top providers.

You’ll also have hardware flexibility — you can use Intuit QuickBooks POS on Windows devices and iPads. The company also offers a host of additional hardware products, such as printers and cash drawers. Unfortunately, you’ll need to use Intuit’s in-house payment processor if you want to access this system.

This is a platform that is built specifically for the retail industry. You’ll even find a range of specifications that help you customize the platform for different retail niches. So, is this the right retail POS system for your business? Let’s take a look at the finer details!

In addition to the above pricing, you will need to pay more money to access the customer support team. This pricing is discussed in my Intuit QuickBooks POS review’s “Customer Service and Support” section.

Key Features

It’s time to examine the different features available in QuickBooks POS. Many of these features are related directly to retail, while others are general POS elements:

  • Intuitive interface that allows for quick transactions and easy navigation
  • Seamless integrations with QuickBooks for easy accounting automation
  • Full inventory management that operates in real-time and integrates with QuickBooks
  • Timesheet integration that will enable you to process payroll directly through QuickBooks
  • Process transactions, add discounts, offer promotions, and perform a range of other general POS-related tasks
  • Scan barcodes to automatically register purchases
  • A hybrid system that consists of hardware and cloud components
  • Track customer purchase activity and history, as well as input customer data
  • Track employee commissions and other metrics
  • Niche specifications for specific retail industries
  • Modify buttons to create shortcuts and give your employees quick access to certain areas of your POS
  • Offer gift cards that automatically track balances and process payments
  • Use the system on a range of touchscreen and desktop devices — including PCs, iPads, and Windows Surface tablets
  • Synchronize multiple stores to track inventory and manage various locations
  • Access to customer support throughout regular business hours, seven days a week

Data Reporting

One of the primary benefits of Intuit QuickBooks POS is its automatic reporting features. This platform syncs with QuickBooks, which is Intuit’s flagship accounting software. You can use this integration to track sales, record relevant information, automate accounting, and more. It’s easy to paint a complete picture of your business when you have this level of integration.

While other platforms offer QuickBooks integration, no other POS software can guarantee a seamless transfer of information. If you’re looking to save time when tax season approaches, this is undoubtedly one of the best systems on the market. The transfer of data to QuickBooks is entirely automated.

Deployment Type

While some Intuit QuickBooks POS reviews indicate this is a locally installed software system, it is better described as a hybrid system. While you will need local hardware to run this platform, the system automatically syncs with QuickBooks to safely secure your data and allow you to access your reporting information from offsite locations.

If you want to benefit from multi-store synchronization and eCommerce features, it’s essential to have a system that includes a cloud component like Intuit QuickBooks POS.

eCommerce Features

Suppose you’re going to invest in a new point of sale system. In that case, it’s also essential to consider the available eCommerce features, especially if you’re transitioning to a bricks-and-click company. Many POS systems now offer full integration with popular eCommerce platforms. While others provide their in-house eCommerce solutions, Intuit QuickBooks POS integrates with online stores such as Magneto or Shopify using ‘Webgility.’ Pricing is available to suit any amount of online sales per month.

Industries Served

Intuit QuickBooks POS is usable for a business of almost any size. While its eCommerce capabilities aren’t substantial, it’s easy to use this platform for a small retail business or sizeable multi-store operation. The suitability of Intuit QuickBooks POS will depend on the plan that you purchase.

The company also offers additional features that apply to specific retail niches. The available specifications are listed below:

  • Small Retail Businesses
  • Apparel and Accessories
  • Sporting Goods and Bicycles
  • Home Improvement Furniture and Furnishings

Essentially, this is a platform you can use for a business of any size — make sure you don’t need extensive eCommerce integrations.

Ease of Use

Intuit QuickBooks POS is straightforward to use. As you set up your new platform, you’ll be walked through the entire process from start to finish. Adding products, processing orders, and performing transactions are highly intuitive. Intuit has years of experience creating seamless software products, so it’s no wonder that ease-of-use is a significant upside associated with this platform.

The only downside is that the system’s interface seems quite dated. You won’t benefit from the same sleek designs that you find with many other leading platforms. Intuit QuickBooks POS software is undoubtedly not the best choice if you’re looking for a modern POS interface.

Intuit QuickBooks POS was previously only a Windows-based system, but it has recently allowed for iPad integration. If you’re using Windows, you’ll need at least Windows Vista or higher. In addition, you can use this platform with a Microsoft Surface Pro if you want a Windows-based tablet. This is undoubtedly a positive feature — you have a wide range of compatible devices to choose from.

Also, you’ll find an excellent catalog of external hardware devices available on the Intuit QuickBooks POS website. You can purchase additional kiosks, printers, and other equipment that will synchronize with your software. Below are a few samples of hardware you can purchase directly from Intuit:

  • Hardware Bundle – $900
  • mPOP (integrated cash drawer and printer) – $449
  • EMV Ready PIN Pad – $389
  • Cash Drawer – $109
  • Receipt Printer – $219
  • Barcode Scanner – $199

As mentioned previously, the primary integration at Intuit QuickBooks POS is the QuickBooks accounting platform. In addition to providing automated reporting and accounting, you can also program it to automatically clock workers in and out of shifts — it’s a great way to automate your payroll processes.

In terms of other integrations, Intuit QuickBooks has a marketplace, but it’s unclear which third-party integrations are compatible with the POS system. If you have a specific integration in mind, it’s best to consult with Intuit QuickBooks before purchasing its POS software.

In terms of add-ons, you can provide gift cards to customers if you purchase a gift card add-on from Intuit QuickBooks POS. It’s important to note that this does cost extra money.

Payment Processing

While Intuit QuickBooks POS offers payment processor integration, you’ll have to sign up with the company as your merchant account service provider to take advantage of this feature. You can choose between ‘Pay as You Go’ (higher percentage fees) and ‘Low Monthly Rates’ (lower fees in exchange for a monthly charge).

Swipe fees range from 2.7% to 2.3% + 25c. You can also ask Intuit for a custom plan if you experience a large transaction volume.

While you have multiple pricing options on offer at Intuit QuickBooks POS, it’s annoying that you have to use its in-house payment processor. This means that you won’t have the chance to shop around for better rates. Plenty of other modern POS providers offer a convenient way to integrate with external payment processors.

Customer Service

Unfortunately, customer service appears to be one of the shortcomings at Intuit QuickBooks POS. This can often be the case when you purchase a point of sale system from a large ‘generalist’ software provider. The customer service hours are limited to the following hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 6 AM to 6 PM (PST)

As a retail store, you may not need as long customer support hours as a hospitability business, but it’s still nice to have complete access to your support team. In addition to the limited hours, you’ll also need to pay money to access the entire support team. The prices for customer support are as follows:

  • $89.95 per month
  • $299.95 per year

You can sometimes access a free month of support if you register your system correctly in the sign-up process. In addition to taking a look at Intuit QuickBooks POS’s customer support features, we also took a look at some frequent complaints about the company. Below are some common issues we found regarding Intuit QuickBooks POS:

  • Customer Service Unhelpful — Some users complain that the customer service team at Intuit QuickBooks POS can be unhelpful. Considering that you have to pay extra for this service, it’s quite concerning that its customer care team lacks responsiveness.
  • System Can Crash — It appears a lot of customers have problems with the system crashing. If you have large order volume, you may experience some issues on this platform.
  • High Upfront Costs — As mentioned previously, the upfront costs associated with this system are pretty significant. If you don’t have the budget to pay the upfront fees for this platform, there are much cheaper subscription alternatives on the market.
  • Upselling — Another common complaint I found involving Intuit QuickBooks POS is the constant need to upgrade the system for added capabilities. It can be a hassle if you’re constantly being upsold to new products — it’s essential to know what you’re paying for when you first sign up.

Most companies have some negative feedback, so it’s important to avoid getting too drawn into the above complaints. Still, customer support is undoubtedly an issue at Intuit QuickBooks POS.

Our Verdict

After exploring all the components of this platform in my Intuit QuickBooks POS review, it’s time to decide if this is the right POS platform for your retail business. If your primary focus is buying a POS system that seamlessly integrates with an automated accounting system, this is the clear favorite.

On the other hand, Intuit QuickBooks POS does come with high upfront costs and lacks in-house eCommerce features. If you’re planning on expanding online, you’ll need to look elsewhere. If you prefer a cloud-based POS with a monthly subscription, some of the top competitors of QuickBooks POS include Clover Station and Shopify Point of Sale.

The suitability of this platform will depend on the type of retail business that you’re operating. Assess the pros and cons in the context of your company. And remember: you can request a free trial if you’d like to try the platform before you make a financial commitment.
