Square barcode scanner not working? Whether you’re using a Bluetooth scanner (Socket Mobile, Zebra), a USB scanner connected through Square Stand/Register, or the Square Terminal’s built-in scanner, failures are incredibly common.
Symptoms include:

  • Scanner won’t connect to Square POS
  • Bluetooth pairing fails or keeps dropping
  • Scanner beeps but nothing scans
  • USB scanner not detected on Square Stand/Register
  • Square POS says “No compatible barcode scanner found”

This guide covers the fastest and most reliable ways to get your Square barcode scanner working again.

Common Reasons Square Barcode Scanners Stop Working

  • Scanner not in the correct mode for Square POS
  • Low battery or auto-sleep mode
  • Bluetooth paired to the wrong device
  • USB connection not receiving enough power
  • Outdated Square POS app or Register OS
  • Scanner model not compatible with Square

How to Fix a Square Barcode Scanner That Isn’t Working

1. Restart the Scanner (Works for Most Models)

Restarting clears memory crashes and reconnects the scanner cleanly.

  • Turn the scanner off
  • Wait 5 seconds
  • Turn it back on

If it won’t power on, charge the scanner for 10 minutes and try again.

2. Ensure the Scanner Is Compatible with Square

Square only supports specific models. Unsupported scanners may pair but won’t send data.

  • Supported Bluetooth scanners: Socket Mobile 7Ci, 7Qi, S700, S740
  • Supported USB scanners: Zebra, Honeywell (USB-HID mode only)

If the scanner model isn’t supported, it will never scan inside Square POS.

3. Reconnect Bluetooth Scanners the Correct Way

Bluetooth scanners must be connected inside the Square POS app, not in iPad/Android settings.

  • Open Square POS → ≡ → Settings → Hardware
  • Select Barcode Scanners
  • Choose your scanner model
  • Tap Connect

If paired incorrectly via device Bluetooth settings, Square will not receive scans.

4. Reset the Scanner to Factory Defaults

If the scanner is stuck in the wrong scanning mode, a reset usually fixes it.

For Socket Mobile:

  • Hold the Scan + Power buttons until it beeps
  • Re-pair inside Square POS

For USB scanners (Zebra/Honeywell): scan the factory reset barcode in the user manual.

5. Check USB Connections (Stand / Register)

Square Stand and Register require the scanner to be in USB-HID keyboard mode.

  • Unplug the scanner
  • Reconnect using a different USB port
  • Check Square’s Hardware → USB Accessories menu

If “USB-HID keyboard” isn’t detected, the scanner will not scan.

6. Update Square POS or Register OS

Old versions of Square POS have known bugs that affect scanner pairing.

  • Open App Store → Update Square POS
  • Restart the Register after updating

Scanner bugs are frequently fixed in software updates.

When to Contact Square Support

  • Scanner disconnects every few minutes
  • Factory reset won’t fix wrong scan modes
  • Scanner beeps but does not register barcodes
  • Square POS refuses to detect any barcode scanners
