“Auto-Approval for Toast Online Ordering is Currently Paused” means Toast detected a problem with the one terminal that approves and fires online orders. That usually happens when it drops offline or logs out. Check Pending Orders for waiting orders first, then make sure that terminal is on, logged in and wired.

Toast may also turn online ordering off for guests while the message shows, so guests may see “Restaurant is currently offline.” A telltale sign is that you can still fire an order by hand with Fire Now, but nothing fires on its own.

Why Toast Online Orders Stop Coming Through

  • The auto-fire device is offline or logged out
  • It’s on Wi-Fi, or on Wi-Fi and Ethernet at once
  • More than one device is set to auto-fire, or the device is in a device group
  • A handheld is set as the auto-fire device
  • Orders are sitting in Pending Orders waiting for approval
  • A non-printing prep station is set up on the auto-fire device

How to Fix Toast Online Orders Not Coming Through

These are the fixes to try, quickest and safest first.

1. Check Pending Orders

Tap the Toast icon in the top left corner of the POS and choose Pending Orders under Mode. Approve or fire any online order that’s waiting. Can’t find it? Open Future Checks and expand the time range. Don’t leave orders sitting there, because a stuck order can pause online ordering again. After an outage some can be old, so it’s often best to check with the guest before you make one.

2. Check the auto-fire device

On the POS, it’s under Device Setup, Order Auto-Firing. It needs to be powered on, logged in to Toast and wired by Ethernet (or USB-C) with Wi-Fi turned off. A quick Wi-Fi drop can trigger the pause, and having Wi-Fi and Ethernet on at once can stop orders from firing. Look in Orders Hub on that device for network errors.

3. Reboot the auto-fire device

Restart that terminal and let it reconnect and log back in. This often brings it back online. Do it between rushes, since that device handles your online orders.

4. Switch Auto Fire off and on

On that terminal, go to Device Setup, switch Auto Fire off, then back on.

5. Make sure it’s the only auto-fire device

  • Only one device should be set to auto-fire, since two print duplicate tickets
  • It can’t be in a device group, because a device in a group won’t receive online orders
  • Use a fixed terminal. A handheld shouldn’t be the auto-fire device, and a Toast Go 2 or Go 3 can’t be

6. Check prep stations and the KDS

If the order isn’t in Pending Orders, make sure the auto-fire device has no non-printing prep stations set up on it. On a KDS, check the ticket filters show every dining option and course your online orders use.

7. Ring in a test order

On the auto-fire device, start a new quick order, set the dining option to Online Ordering Takeout and send an item to the kitchen. Confirm it prints or shows on the KDS and appears in Orders Hub. This often clears a paused state.

8. Refresh Toast Web

In Toast Web, refresh the Takeout & delivery page. The message can take a few minutes to clear.

9. Switch Approval Mode and back

Still paused? In Toast Web, open the Takeout & delivery page and go to your online ordering availability settings, then scroll to the Approval section. Set Approval Mode to Approve manually, save, then set it back to Send orders directly to kitchen and save again. Switching modes makes the system resync the auto-fire device. Do this between rushes. While it’s on Approve manually, every online order waits in Pending Orders until someone approves it.

Late Orders and Third-Party Orders

If orders arrive but fire late, check Order Delay first. It adds a wait before a new order fires so the kitchen can finish current work. You can find it on the POS and on the Online Ordering Dashboard in Toast Web.

DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub orders use the same auto-fire device, so the same checks apply.

When to Contact Toast Support

Contact Toast Customer Care if the message is still there after the test order and a Toast Web refresh, or if orders keep landing in Pending Orders. Have this ready:

  • The auto-fire device’s power, login and Ethernet status
  • The online status of your other devices
  • The exact message on the POS or in Orders Hub
  • Which orders are affected: online, third-party or scheduled
  • What you tried, such as the reboot, the test order and the Approval Mode switch

Toast Online Orders FAQs

Can guests still order online while auto-approval is paused?

They may not be able to. Online ordering can be turned off for guests while the message shows, and your page stops taking orders when the auto-fire device stops approving and firing for about five minutes.

If the auto-fire device is logged out, do online orders still fire?

No. Orders have to be approved by hand until it’s logged back in.

Can I set two devices to auto-fire as a backup?

No. Two auto-fire devices print duplicate tickets. If you pick a new one, Toast unassigns the others.

Can a Toast Go be the auto-fire device?

No. A Toast Go 2 or Go 3 can’t be. Use a fixed terminal that stays on, logged in and wired.
