- Corrupted Toast POS app data
- Hardware failure on older tablets
How to Fix a Frozen Toast POS Terminal or Tablet
1. Force Close & Reopen the Toast POS App
This resolves most temporary freezes.
- Open the tablet’s recent apps screen
- Swipe away the Toast POS app
- Reopen Toast POS
If the screen responds again but feels slow, continue below.
2. Restart the Terminal or Tablet
A full reboot clears memory issues and is the fastest fix for long freezes.
- Hold the power button
- Select Restart
- Reopen Toast POS and test responsiveness
3. Check for Overheating
If the terminal overheats—common in kitchens—it may stop responding until it cools.
- Move the device away from warm equipment
- Let it cool for 2–5 minutes
- Restart Toast POS
4. Close Background Apps
Too many apps running at once can choke lower-end tablets used for Toast.
- Open Recent Apps
- Swipe away everything except Toast POS
5. Check Wi-Fi or Network Stability
Frozen checkout screens often happen when the network drops during transaction processing.
- Verify the device is on the correct network
- Restart the router if possible
- Avoid guest or public Wi-Fi networks
If the KDS is lagging too, it may be network-related. See Toast KDS Not Working.
6. Update Toast POS to the Latest Version
Older versions of Toast POS are known to freeze during peak hours.
- Restart the terminal
- Install updates if prompted
- Refresh the Toast POS app
7. Clear Toast POS App Data (If Allowed)
Some Toast-compatible tablets let you clear cached data to resolve freezing.
- Settings → Apps
- Find Toast POS
- Tap Storage
- Select Clear Cache
Do not clear “App Data” unless instructed by Toast Support.
8. Check for Hardware Issues
If the touchscreen won’t respond at all:
- Test if buttons still work
- Try rotating the screen
- Clean the touchscreen surface
- Test another power outlet
If the device responds intermittently, the screen digitizer may be failing.
