Common Causes of Toast Printer Not Printing
- Printer offline or not powered on
- Wi-Fi or network drops
- Incorrect routing settings in Toast Admin
- Printer assigned to the wrong station
- Paper jam or incorrect paper loading
- Network cable disconnected
- IP address changed after printer reboot
- Outdated Toast software
- Thermal printer overheating during peak hours
How to Fix a Toast Printer That’s Not Printing
1. Check Power, Cables & Paper
Start with the basics—Toast printers often fail because of a loose cable or jammed paper.
- Make sure the printer is powered on (green light)
- Reseat the power cable & network/Ethernet cable
- Open the printer and ensure paper is installed correctly (shiny side facing down)
- Remove any jammed paper
2. Restart the Printer
A simple reboot fixes most Toast printer issues.
- Turn printer off → wait 5 seconds → turn back on
- Listen for the feed/init sound
- Print a test page if your model supports it
3. Confirm the Printer Is on the Correct Network
Toast printers must be on the same network as your Toast terminals.
- Check your router or access point
- Make sure the printer cable is plugged into the correct port
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi or secondary networks
If other Toast devices like the KDS are also lagging or missing orders, it’s likely a network-wide issue. See our Toast KDS Not Working guide.
4. Reassign the Printer in Toast Admin
This is a very common cause—printer routing rules may be incorrect.
- Login to Toast Admin
- Go to Device Setup → Printers
- Select the affected printer
- Confirm it’s assigned to the correct station (Kitchen, Expo, Receipt, etc.)
- Save and restart the terminal
5. Check the Printer’s IP Address
If the printer’s IP changes after a reboot, Toast may lose the connection.
- Print the printer’s network status page
- Compare the IP address with the one assigned in Toast Admin
- Update Toast routing if needed
6. Update Toast Software
Outdated Toast versions can cause printing failures and routing issues.
- Restart your POS terminals
- Install Toast updates if prompted
- Refresh the printer settings afterward
7. Test a Different Receipt or Kitchen Station
If tickets print from another station, the issue is routing—not the printer.
8. Check for Overheating
Printers near hot equipment (grills, fryers, salamanders) may temporarily stop printing.
- Move the printer away from heat
- Let it cool for 2–3 minutes
- Try printing again
